Looking for expert help with GST and income tax for car wash and detailing businesses India? The team at Tax Garden, based in Kondapur, Hyderabad, helps Indian SMEs stay compliant. End-to-end filings, notices, and deadline tracking, all in one place.
Key Takeaways
- Car washing, polishing, waxing and undersealing are classified under SAC 998714 (CBIC Explanatory Notes) and taxed at 18% GST (Notification 11/2017-CT(Rate), S. No. 25).
- Ceramic coating and detailing packages are also 18%: the service is the principal supply, and polishes under HSN 3405 are 18% too.
- Register once turnover crosses Rs 20 lakh (Rs 10 lakh in four north-eastern states). The Rs 40 lakh limit doesn't apply, because you supply a service.
- With last year's turnover up to Rs 50 lakh, you can choose 6% composition under Section 10(2A). It isn't open if you take bookings through an app that collects TCS.
- For FY 2025-26, Section 44AD lets you declare 6% of digital receipts and 8% of cash receipts as profit, and file ITR-4.
What is the GST rate on car wash services? Car washing is taxed at 18% GST (9% CGST plus 9% SGST). CBIC's Explanatory Notes place vehicle laundry, car-wash, polishing and waxing services under SAC 998714 in Heading 9987, which S. No. 25 of Notification 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate) taxes at 9% CGST. The GST 2.0 changes of 22 September 2025 left this rate unchanged.
A car wash looks like a cash business with nothing to file until the bay gets busy. Then a second pressure washer goes in, a ceramic coating package goes on the board, a doorstep wash app starts sending bookings, and a taxi fleet asks for monthly GST invoices. Each of those changes your GST position. This guide works through the CBIC notifications for car washing and detailing. It then covers registration, the composition choice, app bookings, and how your income is taxed for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27). If you also do mechanical repairs and sell spare parts, read our garage owner guide as well.
Which GST rate applies to car washing and detailing?
18%, for washing and for detailing. The Scheme of Classification of Services that GST uses has its own explanatory notes from CBIC. Under SAC 998714 ("maintenance and repair of transport machinery and equipment"), item vi covers "cleaning and routine maintenance services, such as vehicle laundry and car-wash services, undersealing, polishing and waxing services". That code sits in Heading 9987 (maintenance, repair and installation services). S. No. 25 of Notification 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate) taxes Heading 9987 at 9% CGST, so your bill carries 9% CGST plus 9% SGST, or 18% IGST on an inter-state supply. Notification 15/2025-CT(Rate), which brought in the GST 2.0 service rates from 22 September 2025, amended other serial numbers but not S. No. 25.
Detailing and ceramic coating. A coating job is mostly labour plus a product that ends up on the car. That makes it a composite supply where the service is the principal supply, so the whole job takes the service rate (Section 8(a), CGST Act). Even if you argued the coating was the main element, polishes and creams for coachwork fall under HSN 3405 at 18% (Notification 9/2025-CT(Rate), Schedule II S. No. 70). You won't find a lower rate by splitting the bill, and you don't need to.
Products you sell over the counter. Car shampoo and other washing preparations under HSN 3402 (Schedule II S. No. 67) and polishes under HSN 3405 are both 18% when sold on their own. Our HSN and SAC code guide explains how to put the right code on each line of the invoice.

Monthly plans and advance payments. For services, GST is due at the earliest of the invoice date, the date you receive payment, or (if no invoice is issued in time) the date you provide the service (Section 13(2), CGST Act). So a resident who pays Rs 1,500 on 1 November for a month of daily washes triggers GST on 1 November, not when the last wash is done. Prepaid plans sold in March belong in that March return.
When do you need GST registration, and is composition worth it?
Registration at Rs 20 lakh. A car wash supplies a service, so you register once aggregate turnover crosses Rs 20 lakh in a financial year, or Rs 10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (Section 22(1), CGST Act). The Rs 40 lakh limit in the third proviso to Section 22(1) is only for suppliers "engaged exclusively in the supply of goods". Selling a few bottles of shampoo doesn't change that. Our registration threshold guide covers how aggregate turnover is counted.
The 6% composition option. Section 10(2A) of the CGST Act lets a service provider whose aggregate turnover in the preceding financial year was up to Rs 50 lakh pay a flat rate on turnover instead of regular GST. The rate is 3% CGST (Notification 2/2019-CT(Rate)) plus 3% SGST, so 6% in all. The conditions:
- You can't collect GST from customers. You issue a bill of supply, not a tax invoice.
- You can't claim input tax credit on chemicals, equipment or rent.
- You can't make inter-state supplies or supply services through an e-commerce operator that collects TCS (Section 10(2A)(b) and (c)).
A worked comparison. Priya runs a single-bay car wash in Pune. Her customers are car owners who can't claim credit, so her prices stay the same whichever scheme she picks. They pay her Rs 36,00,000 in the year. She buys Rs 8,00,000 of chemicals, consumables and services, plus Rs 1,44,000 GST on them.
| Item | Regular GST at 18% (Rs) | Composition at 6% (Rs) |
|---|---|---|
| Collected from customers | 36,00,000 | 36,00,000 |
| Output GST inside that amount (36,00,000 x 18/118) | 5,49,153 | Not charged |
| Less input tax credit | 1,44,000 | Not allowed |
| GST paid to the government | 4,05,153 | 2,16,000 (6% of 36,00,000) |
| Paid to suppliers, including their GST | 9,44,000 | 9,44,000 |
| Left with Priya | 22,50,847 | 24,40,000 |
Composition leaves Priya about Rs 1,89,000 better off, because her customers can't use a tax invoice anyway. The answer flips if a large share of your work goes to customers who can claim credit, or if you buy expensive equipment with GST on it. Rerun these numbers with your own figures before you opt in, and compare them in our composition scheme guide.
Fleet customers, dealers and doorstep apps
Who can claim credit on your bill. Section 17(5)(ab) of the CGST Act blocks credit on "servicing, repair and maintenance" of motor vehicles with up to 13 seats. Credit is still allowed where the vehicle is used for further supply of such vehicles, transport of passengers or driving training. So a car dealer washing stock cars, a taxi operator or a driving school can claim your GST. A company washing its staff cars generally can't. That matters in two ways: those three groups will want a tax invoice with their GSTIN, and they'll weigh a composition bill (with no GST to claim) differently.
Doorstep wash apps. If you take bookings through an app that collects tax at source under Section 52, Section 24(ix) requires registration. But Notification 65/2017-Central Tax exempts suppliers of services through such platforms whose all-India aggregate turnover is up to Rs 20 lakh (Rs 10 lakh in special category states). Once you're registered, the app collects 0.25% CGST on your net taxable supplies (Notification 52/2018-Central Tax, as amended by Notification 15/2024-Central Tax from 10 July 2024), plus the state tax share. That amount shows up in your electronic cash ledger. Our e-commerce TCS guide explains how to claim it. Remember that app bookings shut you out of composition.
Step-by-Step Guide

Dealers, taxi operators and driving schools can claim your GST, so give them a tax invoice with their GSTIN.
Book advances when you receive them
Monthly plans and prepaid packages attract GST on the date of payment under Section 13(2).

How is a car wash owner's income taxed for FY 2025-26?
Section 44AD applies. A car wash is a business, not a specified profession, so the presumptive scheme for businesses applies. A resident individual, HUF or partnership firm (not an LLP) can declare 6% of receipts received through banking channels and 8% of the rest as profit. Total receipts must be within Rs 2 crore, or Rs 3 crore where cash receipts don't exceed 5% (Section 44AD, Income-tax Act 1961). Depreciation and running costs are treated as already allowed. If you leave 44AD within five years of opting in, you can't return to it for the next five years (Section 44AD(4)). From tax year 2026-27, the same rule is Section 58(2), Table S. No. 1, of the Income-tax Act 2025. Our Section 44AD guide covers the details.
A worked example. Arjun runs two car wash outlets in Hyderabad as a sole proprietor. His FY 2025-26 receipts are Rs 1,20,00,000: Rs 1,08,00,000 by UPI, card and bank transfer, and Rs 12,00,000 in cash. Cash is 10% of receipts, so the Rs 2 crore limit applies, and he's within it.
| Item | Amount (Rs) |
|---|---|
| 6% of Rs 1,08,00,000 digital receipts | 6,48,000 |
| 8% of Rs 12,00,000 cash receipts | 96,000 |
| Deemed business income | 7,44,000 |
| Tax under the new regime (5% on Rs 3,44,000 above Rs 4 lakh) | 17,200 |
| Less Section 87A rebate (total income up to Rs 12 lakh) | 17,200 |
| Tax payable | Nil |
Arjun has no other income. Even at nil tax, he files ITR-4, which resident individuals, HUFs and firms (other than LLPs) can use for 44AD income when total income is up to Rs 50 lakh. If a cash-heavy year pushes cash receipts above 5% and turnover past Rs 2 crore, 44AD stops being available that year, so watch the cash share as you grow.
When books are better. A new outlet with a large rent deposit, loan interest and fresh equipment can earn well below 6% to 8% of receipts in its first year. To declare less than the 44AD figure when your income is above the basic exemption limit, you need books and a tax audit under Section 44AB(e). For FY 2025-26, audited returns follow the extended dates: audit report by 21 October 2026 and return by 21 November 2026 (CBDT Circular 07/2026). Non-audit returns were due on 31 July 2026; a belated return can still be filed by 31 December 2026 (Section 139(4)), with a late fee of Rs 5,000, or up to Rs 1,000 if total income doesn't exceed Rs 5 lakh (Section 234F).
Depreciation if you keep books. Appendix I to the Income-tax Rules 1962 gives 15% to general plant and machinery: pressure washers, foam cannons, vacuum cleaners, steam machines and water recycling units. Computers and billing systems get 40%, and furniture and fittings get 10%. If you put Rs 4,00,000 of equipment to use in June, the first-year claim is Rs 60,000. Put it to use in December instead and it's used for under 180 days, so the claim halves to Rs 30,000 (proviso to Section 32(1)). Our depreciation guide explains the block-of-assets method.
Common mistakes car wash owners make
- Charging GST without registration, or charging it under composition. Either way, you collect tax you aren't allowed to collect, and you still have to pay it to the government.
- Billing coating jobs at a "product" rate. There is no lower rate to find. The whole job is 18% under SAC 998714.
- Ignoring advances on monthly plans. GST is due when the money comes in, not when the plan ends.
- Opting for composition while on a TCS-collecting app. Section 10(2A)(c) rules it out, and the app's TCS shows up in your ledger anyway.
- Promising every business client a GST credit. Section 17(5)(ab) blocks it for most companies' staff cars. Only dealers, taxi operators and driving schools can claim it.
