Kar Saathi vs Managed Compliance: Where the Government's Free AI Tax Tool Helps Indian Businesses (and Where It Doesn't)

Kar Saathi is a genuinely useful tool. If you are a salaried individual with a simple ITR and occasional tax questions, the Income Tax Department's new AI assistant is free and should be your first stop. If you run a business with GST registration, employees, or a company structure, Kar Saathi is not designed for you.

In April 2026, the Income Tax Department launched Kar Saathi, a free AI-powered assistant available on the e-filing portal and as a standalone app. It offers 24x7 chatbot support, ITR filing guidance, refund tracking, e-payment integration, and notice response help. For individual taxpayers who previously paid for basic tax filing help, this is a meaningful upgrade.

But Kar Saathi is a self-service AI, not a compliance service. It does not file your GST returns, deduct TDS, prepare Form 138 / 140 / 144, handle your ROC filings, run payroll, or stand behind errors. For business owners, the honest question is: where does Kar Saathi help, where does it fall short, and when should you still invest in managed compliance?

Looking for expert help with Kar Saathi review vs managed tax compliance for Indian businesses? The team at Tax Garden helps Indian SMEs stay compliant end-to-end: filings, notices, and advisory, all in one place.

What Kar Saathi Actually Does

Kar Saathi is an AI chatbot and guided workflow layered on top of the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal. Its announced feature set:

  • 24x7 chatbot assistance for income tax queries in English and several Indian languages
  • Guided ITR filing with pre-filled data from Form 26AS, AIS, and Form 130
  • Refund tracking with status and expected credit timeline
  • Notice management including reading notices, drafting responses, and e-verification
  • E-payment integration for advance tax, self-assessment tax, and TDS deposits via the portal
  • Regime comparison (old vs new) for salaried individuals
  • Link to grievance redressal under the e-Nivaran framework

For a salaried employee filing ITR-1 or ITR-2 with typical income, Kar Saathi handles most of the work. For pensioners, senior citizens, and first-time filers, it lowers the barrier meaningfully.

Where Kar Saathi Helps

Kar Saathi is genuinely useful for:

  1. Salaried individuals with a straightforward ITR. If your income is salary + interest + a simple rental, Kar Saathi's guided ITR-1 or ITR-2 flow works.
  2. Basic tax queries. "What is the new regime slab?" "When is my refund due?" "How do I e-verify my return?" Kar Saathi answers in seconds.
  3. Checking your Form 26AS, AIS, and Form 130. Fetching pre-filled data is where AI genuinely accelerates filing.
  4. Reading a small tax notice. Kar Saathi can summarise a notice into plain language and point you to the response window.
  5. E-verification of your return after filing, with OTP or Aadhaar methods.

If that describes your situation, use Kar Saathi. It is free, available on the official portal, and does not sell your data to advertisers.

Where Kar Saathi Falls Short for Businesses

Kar Saathi is limited to the income tax scope of the Income Tax Department's portal. It does not cover the other compliance layers that every Indian business handles month after month.

GST Is Not in Scope

Kar Saathi is built on the e-filing portal for income tax. It does not file your GST returns. GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, GSTR-9C, IMS (Invoice Management System), LUT filing, e-invoicing, and e-way bills all sit on a separate GST portal under the CBIC, not the Income Tax Department. Kar Saathi will not help you with:

  • Monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B preparation
  • Quarterly QRMP filings
  • Annual GSTR-9 reconciliation
  • IMS acceptance or rejection of vendor invoices
  • GST notice responses (a separate CBIC process)

For GST compliance, see our GST compliance guide for quick commerce sellers or IMS mandatory guide depending on your business type.

TDS Returns Are Your Responsibility

Kar Saathi can guide an individual through ITR filing, but it does not file your quarterly TDS returns. Under the Income Tax Act 2025, a business with employees or vendor payments must file Form 138 (salary TDS), Form 140 (non-salary resident TDS), and Form 144 (non-resident TDS) every quarter. Kar Saathi will not:

  • Calculate monthly TDS deduction
  • Generate Form 130 TDS certificates for your employees
  • File Form 138, 140, or 144 on TRACES
  • Handle correction statements within the new 2-year window
  • Manage TDS challans and payment mapping to the new 1001-1092 code framework

For the complete TDS scope under the new Act, see our TDS and TCS changes guide for FY 2026-27.

ROC Compliance Has No Overlap

If you are a Private Limited Company or LLP, ROC annual compliance is handled entirely by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs through the MCA21 portal. Kar Saathi does not touch:

  • MGT-7 (Annual Return)
  • AOC-4 (Annual Financials)
  • ADT-1 (Auditor Appointment)
  • DIR-3 KYC
  • DPT-3 (Deposits return)
  • Form 11 and Form 8 (LLPs)
  • CCFS-2026 amnesty filings

For these, see our CCFS-2026 scheme guide if you have pending filings, or our LLP annual compliance guide.

Payroll and Labour Compliance Are Out of Scope

Kar Saathi does not manage:

  • PF, ESI, and Professional Tax registrations and monthly filings
  • State-wise PT rate differences (important if you employ across Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra)
  • Monthly PF challan preparation and UAN reconciliation
  • Labour law compliance under the Code on Wages, Code on Social Security, and state Shops and Establishments Acts

For the state-wise PT framework, see our professional tax guide for employers and PF/ESI compliance guide.

Proactive Compliance Does Not Exist

Kar Saathi is reactive. You ask it a question, it answers. It does not:

  • Track your due dates and remind you before a deadline
  • Notify you when a new CBDT circular changes your obligation
  • Reconcile your books monthly against Form 26AS, AIS, and GST 2A
  • Flag anomalies that would surface in an audit
  • Represent you in a tax assessment or appellate proceeding

There Is No Penalty Protection

If Kar Saathi gives an incorrect answer that causes you to file wrong, miss a deadline, or misapply a deduction, there is no indemnity. The Income Tax Department is explicit that the AI is an advisory tool. Errors are the taxpayer's risk.

For businesses, this is the single biggest difference from a managed service. A missed GSTR-3B filing attracts Rs. 200 per day late fee (capped). A missed MGT-7 filing attracts Rs. 100 per day with no cap, recently covered under the CCFS-2026 amnesty. A late TDS return carries Rs. 200 per day late fee. A single error can cost more than a year of managed compliance fees.

When Kar Saathi Is Enough

Be honest about your situation. If you are:

  • A salaried individual with only salary, interest, and maybe one rental
  • A pensioner with standard deductions
  • A student filing a refund claim for a small stipend
  • A retired person with interest and dividend income
  • A first-time filer with income below Rs. 7 lakh and no capital gains

Kar Saathi is enough. You do not need a managed service, and Tax Garden does not serve this segment.

When You Need Managed Compliance

You likely need managed compliance if any of the following apply:

  • You run a business with a GST registration
  • You have employees and deduct TDS or pay PF / ESI
  • You are a Private Limited Company, LLP, or OPC with ROC obligations
  • You have multiple GSTINs or operate across states
  • Your business has marketplace sales (Amazon, Flipkart, Blinkit, Zomato)
  • You import or export and file LUT, Bill of Entry, or DGFT returns
  • Your annual turnover exceeds the GST audit threshold (Rs. 5 crore)
  • You have had a tax notice or assessment in the last three years
  • You want peace of mind on deadlines, not a Sunday scramble before the 20th

For any of these, Kar Saathi is not a substitute.

The Honest Positioning

Tax Garden's view on Kar Saathi is straightforward:

  1. We recommend Kar Saathi for our clients' employees. If your HR team is explaining ITR filing to staff, pointing them to Kar Saathi is the right call. It is free, official, and works.
  2. We do not compete with Kar Saathi. We handle the business-side compliance (GST, TDS, ROC, payroll, ITR for directors / partners) where Kar Saathi does not reach. These are two different products.
  3. Penalty protection is our differentiator. Our Kavach guarantee covers up to Rs. 50,000 in service charges for any clerical or data error on our side. No free AI tool offers this.
  4. A named CA, not a chatbot. If your filing is wrong, you want a human with a UDIN to answer for it. That is the line a managed service draws.

What You Should Do This Week

  1. If you are an individual taxpayer: Try Kar Saathi on the e-filing portal. See if it answers your ITR questions. For most salaried profiles, it will.
  2. If you run a business: Do not wait for Kar Saathi to cover GST or ROC. It will not. Get a managed compliance plan in place before the Q1 FY 2026-27 deadlines hit (July 2026).
  3. If you are a Hyderabad employer: Tax Garden's Kondapur office handles GST, TDS, ROC, and payroll for local SMEs and startups. Book a free 30-minute consultation and we will quote a fixed fee on the same call.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kar Saathi?

Kar Saathi is a free AI-powered tax assistant launched by the Income Tax Department of India in April 2026. It offers 24x7 chatbot support, ITR filing guidance, refund tracking, e-payment, and notice management through the e-filing portal.

Is Kar Saathi really free?

Yes. It is built and operated by the Income Tax Department. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase, and no data-sale monetisation.

Can Kar Saathi file my GST returns?

No. Kar Saathi is scoped to income tax under the Income Tax Department. GST compliance runs on a separate GST portal under the CBIC. For GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, IMS, and e-invoicing you need a different tool or a managed service.

Can Kar Saathi handle my company's TDS returns?

No. Kar Saathi does not file Form 138, 140, or 144. Quarterly TDS returns are an employer obligation handled through TRACES with proper challan reconciliation. A managed compliance service or a qualified CA is needed.

Is Kar Saathi safer than a third-party tax filing website?

Security-wise, yes. Your data stays within the Income Tax Department's infrastructure. You are not sharing credentials or financial data with a third-party platform. This is a real advantage over free third-party ITR websites.

I own a Pvt Ltd company. Can I skip managed compliance and use Kar Saathi?

No. A Private Limited Company has ROC obligations (MGT-7, AOC-4, ADT-1), TDS returns, likely GST, and payroll filings, none of which are within Kar Saathi's scope. You need a managed compliance partner or a CA firm.

What is Kavach protection?

Kavach is Tax Garden's indemnity for clerical and data errors on our side, covering up to Rs. 50,000 in service charges. Free AI tools do not offer this because they disclaim liability for any advisory errors.

Will Kar Saathi eventually cover GST and ROC?

The government has not announced such an expansion. GST and ROC are administered by different ministries (CBIC and MCA) with their own portals and tools. Even if Kar Saathi eventually integrates, ongoing business compliance typically needs human oversight that an AI chatbot alone does not provide.

Kar Saathi Can't File Your GST, TDS, or ROC Returns

Tax Garden handles the ongoing compliance Kar Saathi does not: GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, Form 138 TDS returns, ROC annual filings, payroll, and Kavach penalty protection up to Rs. 50,000.
